I have loved UK brand Antiform for sometime now. Their bold, bright, easy to wear and flattering pieces are right down my street design-wise and they are made 100% from reclaimed fabric in the UK. Their latest Collection 8 Spring/Summer newsletter popped into my inbox recently and I got so excited again - their new Epic Trousers are to die for! - that I could not help creating a little style board matching some of their new designs with Plastic Seconds necklaces! Cheeky Handmades Fab Sewing Workshop!

It has been a long held desire of mine to learn to use my sewing machine as I obviously want to become more and more able to create more things by myself from upcycled fabric, or alter and mend clothes from charity shops or make some of my own clothes! I believe we are heading towards an era when it will be a very good idea for all of us to be proficient in sewing; increasingly making our own clothes is also one of the best ways to be fabulous in an affordable, creative and caring-for-this-earth-and-this-world way. A couple of years ago I met at a marketing workshop the amazing Jennie Caminada of Cheeky Handmades and since then I had the intention to learn with her. About a month ago this intention finally manifested and I attended one of her sewing workshops, during which I learned both to use my lovely sewing machine and make a cushion cover! We also did this in a 'new economy' kind of way, in that I created for her a special Plastic Seconds one-off collection in exchange for the teaching I received, which was beautiful! Below are some pics of the pieces I made for her and the super funky and friendly workshop space in Jennie's house. I really enjoyed the atmosphere in this space, but Jennie is passionate about sewing and delivers great classes and she is now trying to raise funds to create a larger beautiful studio / teaching space in her garden. This studio will help Jennie make more classes available to more people, but she also intends to turn it into a local community space by allowing other local businesses and teachers to use it when she is not using it. Plastic Seconds 'Shamaness' shoot illustrated for Cent Magazine

I recently collaborated with the lovely photographer Nyla Sammons and make-up artist Babs Forman to create an experimental fashion shoot to which I gave the title 'Shamaness'. I have been meaning for sometime now to start exploring more the territory of styling and photography and there will be more work of this nature to show in the near future :-) I styled this shoot with Plastic Seconds jewellery and one-off props and backgrounds I created. I focused on the theme of an imaginary female Shamaness wanting to emphasise the need for the awakening of the feminine in our world. Having read quite a bit on Shamanism recently, I am feeling excited about the ways in which this ancient wisdom can be used in our contemporary lives to enrich them and to improve our relationship with ourselves and our planet. I was subsequently asked by Cent Magazine to create illustrations with my illustrating alter ego Slowly The Eggs to accompany this shoot - the result followed the magazine's JUXTAPOSED theme for November and you can see it published here!

Plastic Seconds in Environmental Justice Foundation's JUST Pop Up Shop on Carnaby Street

The lovely Supermarket Sarah, with whom Plastic Seconds has now had the pleasure to collaborate with a few times, created just before XMas one of her special walls in EJF's pop up shop on Carnaby Street featuring the fantastic The Rodnik Band (who's very own studio we have visited and blogged about here!). The wall was based around the theme of safer seas, which is one of EJF's campaigns and features The Rodnik Band's 'Cod Save the Sea' collection. AS PART OF SUPERMARKET SARAH'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE POP UP SHOP PLASTIC SECONDS BIRO LID NECKLACES AND EARRINGS HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE AND ARE STILL AVAILABLE THERE UNTIL THE 15TH OF FEBRUARY!

EJF’s pop up shop ‘JUST’ at 46 Carnaby Street sells designer, fairly-traded, organic t-shirts created by top designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Katharine Hamnett, Giles Deacon, Christian Lacroix and many more.

All proceeds from the t-shirts go to the charity and help them to campaign internationally for environmental justice. This is fashion that doesn’t cost the earth and its helping to raise awareness of the abuses in the cotton industry, the issues of climate change and the need to eradicate illegal fishing in West Africa.

Plastic Seconds UPCYCLISTED!

I have meant to mention here that sometime last November Plastic Seconds was 'UPCYCLISTED' - i.e. featured in the lovely site that is the Upcyclist and then listed in their upcycling artists directory. Thank you Upcyclist! Well worth taking a look at the Upcyclist website as it showcases lots of great ideas and design in the fields of upcycling/recycling and they also have a community/forum feature via which you can discuss with other visitors to the site.

Henrietta Thompson  writes on architecture and design for a number of international magazines and newspapers.

Plastic Seconds takes part in Traces 'Junk' Shop show at Tom Dixon during the London Design Festival 2012

For one week, from Monday the 17th of September to Sunday the 23rd of September, at the Tom Dixon Dock (a gorgeous place!), Traces presents a teaser event - the Traces ‘Junk’ Shop and Plastic Seconds is delighted to have some pieces as part of this installation. Come rummage through a wonderful collection of homewares, all made by some of the best emerging design talent in the UK, take in the smells around you, interact with objects, and see what you can discover. Who is the shop keeper, where did all this stuff come from? And how much does it cost?! So many questions for you to answer!

Through this clever and refreshing way of exhibiting new design you are invited to come along to discover these histories for yourselves, come rummage at the junk shop with a difference; wander in the shop, left as if only a moment before, and unpick its secrets. Interact with the curated collection of art and design pieces to unravel clues. And don’t forget you can buy your favourites along the way.

‘Traces’ aims to give the very newest up and coming artists and designers a way to reach the industry and the public. And evolving a new way to experience art and design, encouraging cross disciplinary collaborative work. ‘Traces’ also wants to open up discussions about the way we currently experience art, design, food and sound.

Plastic Seconds with the Secret Emporium at The Secret Garden Party 2012

Okay... this post has also been long overdue, but here is a 'little' photographic roundup of what happened when Plastic Seconds went to The Secret Garden Party with The Secret Emporium this July!
