Plastic Seconds guest speaker during Wake Up Campaign event at Rich Mix

‘Conscious Swap Shopping’ taking place this autumn at Rich Mix London as part of the London Design Festival is an initiative created by the behavioural change social enterprise Wakeup Campaign.

The events will be an exploration of our consciousness through the way we consume, behave, shop and feel by introspectively debating on identity, habits, behavioural patterns and the psychoanalysis of our shopping rituals.

Not only will you have the opportunity to bring your clothes and swap them for new ones, there will be a Q&A session where influential guest speakers from the sustainable fashion, lifestyle & academic sphere will be discussing their work, debating on how we can all contribute and help within the re-using/up cycling marketplace. Plastic Seconds has the pleasure to be one of them, while other guests include Zahra Mansouri, Grassroots and Nicholas ODH, part of the research-led collective, SAINT H.

The space will be filled with interesting sections for people to become immersed in fashion for change. There will be a section where people can get their clothes customised by a professional costume designer, engage with visual stimulants for people to interact and engage with, there will be raffles to be won, loads of goodies for sale and not forgetting the fabulous clothes people acquire when they swap!

Venue: Rich Mix 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, London, Greater London E1 6LA (nearest station Shoreditch Tube Station)

Date: 17th September 2012, 6-11pm

Tickets: £8 online (buy your tickets here) £10 on the door

Plastic Seconds goes to LA with Thank You For Creating and Britweek - via The Stitch Project

Between the 12th and the 29th of April Plastic Seconds was in LA! The Sticth Project team, with whom I have collaborated before, invited me to exhibit one of my pieces next to lots of other paintings, sculpture, photography, printmaking and video art, at the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Los Angeles, as part of a T4C (Thank You For Creating) show in collaboration with Britweek, in an effort to promote the spirit of unified competition amongst the British and Angeleno creative communities.
This year, T4C celebrated the 2012 Olympics theme 'On Sustainability' by challenging artists to create works that express his or her unique vision on this topic.
Some ideas for consideration were on environmental, societal, cultural and economic degradation; issues to do with climate change, waste, recycling, biodiversity, inclusion, cohesion and regeneration; sourcing art materials with low-embodied carbon; re-use of materials and found objects.

Plastic Seconds at London College of Communication 's 'Green Week'

In the beginning of February I was invited by Sarah Bagner of Supermarket Sarah to take part along with lots of other creatives in London College of Communication's Green Week by making a 'wall' - in the style of Supermarket Sarah - and offering students advice on how they can use throwaway materials in new exciting ways. Sarah Bagner played a major role throughout the week by inviting artists and designers with an interest in sustainability, as well as by interacting with the college's students and encouraging them to take part in the activities. The week was co-curated by Sarah Temple and Tara Hanrahan who were both a pleasure to work with and meet.
I wrote a review of LCC's Green Week in Amelia's Magazine, where you can read more about what happened. You can also read about Plastic Seconds' appearance on the LCC Head of College blog here and the lovely Sarah Bagner mentioned us in her blog too!

I love this image of Sara Bagner with her patchwork made out of plastic bags :-)

2011 Leftovers 10: Plastic Seconds at STITCH 'Art for the Earth' show

A few months back Plastic Seconds took part in the first major exhibition and auction by Stitch at The Dairy, near Russel Square. Stitch is an organisation that raises environmental awareness through the arts. Stitch does this by hosting events that use art to inspire and engage people with environmental issues.
This art auction featured the works of 40 artists - both emerging and established - working with a variety of different mediums to communicate a range of environmental issues including; Waste, Loss of Biodiversity, Sustainability, Water, Food, Farming, and more. The pieces started at £20 up to around £15,000 – so there was definitely something for everyone! Works by artists such as Richard Long, Darren AlmondMarc Quinn and Richard Wentworth, as well as many others, were featured. The event was in unison with EJF, Living Earth Foundation, Greenpeace and 10:10. You can see the works by checking our online catalogue HERE.
The pieces by Plastic Seconds were modelled on the auction night by members of the Stitch team :-) The fab lady that is Pandemonia attended the show and she featured us on her account of the night here!
